The Women's Home
The Women's Home
Homelessness is a serious topic in our country. When you are not only homeless but are also a mother it is difficult to take care of your children. In Houston, we have many homeless organizations that help take care of our homeless population. One of these exceptional organizations is the Women’s Home.
The Women’s Home has been serving Houston since 1957. It began as an overnight shelter in a home for women in need. It has expanded into providing housing, rehabilitation, as well as child care for women in need. The Women’s Home has their own resale shop, the Cottage Shop, located next to their offices. The Women’s Home offers lots of volunteer opportunities throughout the year. They also sponsor many fundraising events for the community to help their organization grow.
For the past year, I have had the pleasure of working for The Women’s Home on building their future facility. It is in the Spring Branch area of Houston. Camden Builders, Inc. is acting as the general contractor for the project. This project will provide 84 two and three bedroom apartments to women and children in need. Of these 84 units, 40 will be set aside for families that have faced repeated homelessness. The Women’s Home rehabilitative model provides these at-risk families with “wraparound” care services and support.
A new facility named the WholeLife Service Center will also be built down the street. The center will be next to the existing Jane Cizik Garden Place Apartments, another facility owned by The Women’s Home. The service center will provide services for the families that live in The Women’s Home housing communities as well as the surroundings neighborhood, as well. The Spring Branch Community Health Center, to be within the WholeLife Service Center, will provide family medicine, pediatrics, and woman services. The clinic will also provide substance abuse and mental services along with other rehabilitative programs.
The groundbreaking for the new apartments took place on June 4, 2015, and is scheduled to be completed at the end of August 2016. It has been such a pleasure being involved in a project that will provide such good to the community. #camdengood
