Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!
Team Arizona proudly represented Camden Property Trust at the 6th Annual UMOM Walk for Homeless Families held at the Phoenix Zoo on Saturday morning, September 26, 2015. 18 employees and their family members joined thousands of other participants from across the Valley of the Sun to participate in the 1K/5K walk/run. Children from 3 months old to adults 18 years and up enjoyed an early morning walk that supported this most worthy cause. According to Dahnn B. who organized Team Arizona, this was our 5th year participating in the event.
When asked what participating in this event means to our employees, here is what they said:
“I am always inspired by the huge amount of people that rally around the U-Mom walk every year!! I am proud and honored to represent Camden at this event each year we participate in “The Walk”. By participating with my grandchildren and showing them how great it is to be able to give back to our community and help the homeless is such a great feeling that we share together that I hope it inspires them to continue to help those in need in the future. A Very Grateful Grandpa!!!” - Andy B.
”The zoo walk was my first Camden Cares event and I truly enjoyed it. Not only am I already a fan of the zoo because I love animals, but it was amazing to see everyone coming together from all walks of life to support UMOM and their cause. My sister also felt the same way and she reiterated the fact that Camden is an awesome company for encouraging and allowing participation in events like this.” – Veronica J.
“For me, UMOM has also been close to my heart as they are 100% focused on homelessness for families. I have met so many of the employees of UMOM and been able to come in contact with the residents of UMOM. Having a daughter myself, I cannot even imagine the fear and stress that comes along with not having a home to raise your child in. UMOM provides housing that appears similar to a hotel or apartment. These children aren’t living on the street; instead they have a safe place to reside. Knowing this, I try and support this worthy cause in any way I can.” - Dahnn B.
Founded in 1964, UMOM, is located in Phoenix, Arizona and is the largest shelter for homeless families in the state. A variety of services are offered in an effort to keep families together, from emergency shelter to transitional housing and finally, permanent, affordable housing. Families at UMOM have the opportunity to gain the skills, medical care, quality child care, and education they need to rebuild their lives and succeed when they leave.
Camden’s 10 Arizona communities are members of the Arizona Multifamily Association (AMA). When Dahnn B. was a Community Manager at Camden Pecos Ranch, she was asked by her supervisor to join one of the AMA committees that focused on building relationships with other associates within our industry. Because of Dahnn’s passion in wanting to give back to the community, she was assigned to the Big Hearts committee.
“The Big Hearts committee votes on charities recommended by the AMA Board of Directors. With UMOM supporting housing for the homeless, it makes sense that our industry provides homes to those less fortunate. Camden has gotten involved in many ways; assisting at UMOM with maintenance projects, painting and cleaning the child care facility, planting flowers and other landscape needs, organizing clothes closets, preparing and serving lunch in the kitchen.”
We are committed to continuing our partnership with UMOM and look forward to participating in their 2016 event. Won’t you join in on all the fun?
