The helpful maintenance teams at our Camden communities are ready to handle any service request, but it is a good practice to maintain your apartment home yourself as preventive maintenance. Although I rent an apartment, I view it as my home and I make sure that I take care of it as best that I can!

These 4 tips to maintain your apartment will help keep your appliances working efficiently, prevent future headaches and save you money.

1. Clean The Air Handler

Cooling your apartment home usually involves two machines: The outside A/C unit (the condenser) and the inside A/C unit (the evaporator). The inside unit, also referred to as an air handler, is usually in a closet. This entire closet should be cleaned, vacuumed, and dusted like any other room in your apartment home.

Also, please don’t actually use it as a closet! Storing items in there could lead to damaged equipment or impacted airflow.

Camden Royal Palms in Tampa, FL Maintenance Supervisor David and Maintenance Technician William recommend changing the air filter in your A/C unit every 30 days!

2. Change The Air Filter

It is recommended to change the air filter in your A/C closet every month. Changing it regularly improves air quality and is helpful for those with allergies or pets. Your A/C unit will also work more efficiently and your electricity bill will thank you! This will also help reduce problems down the road.

3. Put Ice Cubes Down The Garbage Disposal

Take a handful of ice cubes and run them through your garbage disposal to sharpen and clean the blades. This helps sanitize any buildup on the blades, which can reduce odd smells. It can be quite loud, so brace yourself!

4. Change The Direction of Your Ceiling Fan Depending on The Season

Disclaimer: Be sure to shut off the ceiling fan and wait for the blades to come to a complete stop before attempting this. Using a ladder or step stool, find the direction switch. In the summer, the fan needs to run in a fast counterclockwise direction, which blows air straight down and lets the heat rise. This also saves your A/C from running constantly.
