(http://camdenblogs.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/icelanta.jpg) Where am I Boston or Atlanta? Since Sunday evening the city of Atlanta and most of North Georgia has been paralyzed by a winter storm that brought first snow and then ice early this week. We all new the storm was approaching. Anytime there is mention of snow here the city panics and the news channels devote the majority of their air time preparing us or scaring us for what is ahead. Between Sunday and Monday we received anywhere between 3-7 inches of snow and then a layer of thick ice resulting from freezing rain. So I’m orgionally from Boston, Massachusetts and during this time of the year you expect snow and winter storms. Three feet of snow, cars buried, but if the streets and sidewalks are plowed guess what kids… you’re still going to school and its work as usual. Schools in North Georgia have been out all week! Some companies have even been closed all week. Highways and major roads like Peachtree Rd were impassable for days! When I speak to friends back home they are amazed that a relatively small amount of snow has basically shut the city down for a week. I explain that number 1. We don’t have the amounts of equipment dedicated to snow and ice removal as cites do up North. Simply because storms like this really are a once a decade or so event and 2. The ice that accumulated on top of the snow. I don’t care where you are and what you’re used to – nobody can drive on ice. With the city shut down and most people stuck in their homes the first winter storm of 2011 has proved to be more than we could handle. Even from a New England girl – I have to admit this was a pretty impressive storm and overall even though its crazy how long its taken the city to recover from the storm, I think that everyone’s safety is more important and I applaud the Atlanta newscasters that worked around the clock informing the public about the treacherous road conditions. This weekend the temperatures during the daytime are supposed to finally get above freezing so hopefully by Monday the city running as usual and hopefully the news is done with their extended broadcasts so I can watch Good Morning America again. It’s been a week and I miss my show. I’m just saying!
