Houston and food go hand in hand. You could probably sample a new cuisine every night for at least a month. But have you taken the chance to experience all of our coffee shops? As a former Barista and current full-time student, coffee is essentially my main food group. So I’ve compiled a summary of some of Houston’s best sources of caffeine to broaden your morning café experience. Let’s start with the Upper Kirby district, the home to Camden Greenway and Camden Plaza.

Luce Ave Coffee Roasters is the newest addition to specialty coffee inside the loop. In a bright, welcoming environment, you’ll find not only signature drinks like the Luce Creamy or the Creamericano, but you'll also find single-origin coffee roasted in-house. Baristas Helen, Eunice, Charlie, and Radly will remember your name and your drink, greet you with smiles, and make you feel at home instantly. There is plenty of seating, WiFi, and it’s well-lit for studying or a meeting.

Just a block away from Luce Ave is Cavo. Cavo has more food options and a rustic industrial vibe. A bit quieter, it’s a good place to start your morning with your paper and a cup of coffee. The seating is well organized to feel open and uncluttered. All of their syrups are handcrafted in house and you’ll receive your latte with the lid off, to display the Barista’s art!

Moving on to Montrose,  all within 10 minutes of Camden Travis Street, Camden City Centre, Camden Midtown, and the new Camden McGowen Station, there are so many options, I feel like I’ve just scratched the surface.

Agora hearkens back to the original purpose of coffee shops, a gathering of intellectuals for discussions and mingling. Peter has created an eclectic atmosphere, combining a coffee shop and a bar, creating the ultimate watering hole. Agora is well-loved by many Houstonians, enough that finding a spot to sit can be challenging, but worthwhile. Whether you arrive with headphones and homework or no agenda other than to meet people, you will enjoy the specialty drinks from Italian soda to frappes, to wine.

If you’re looking for more pastries or something a little dressier, walk right next door to, Common Bond Café and Bakery. Their Lavender Latte is unsurpassed and you can pair it with a variety of breakfast or lunch options. Be prepared for a line, but don’t be daunted, it moves quickly! There is group seating at the long harvest table, or more private booth and small table seating. This may be the perfect brunch spot!

Next up, Southside Espresso! Quirky and niche, Southside’s aroma will saturate your senses. Friendly baristas will encourage you to try something new, whether it be kombucha, a flat white, or whatever they’re brewing for the day. Seating is a bit sparse, but Southside is tucked away and doesn’t get the crazy traffic, so it’s less of a problem.
