At Camden, giving back to the communities we serve is at the heart of what we do. From supporting local nonprofits to creating meaningful volunteer opportunities, Camden Cares helps our team members stay connected to the communities they serve. Through our Camden Cares initiative, our Austin team recently had the opportunity to volunteer with The Heartening, a local nonprofit located near our very own Camden Lamar Heights, dedicated to making clothing and household items accessible, affordable, and sustainable for those who need them most.

The Heartening's mission is simple yet powerful: to put clothing back into the local community as affordably and sustainably as possible. Their work is built on the belief that every unwanted item has value and that, with a little help, it can find its way to someone who truly needs it.

Finding Purpose in Every Donation

Too often, unwanted clothing and household goods sit untouched in closets, garages, and storage units for years before ultimately ending up in a landfill. At the same time, families and individuals throughout our community face real needs that these items could help meet.

The Heartening bridges that gap by connecting donated items with people who can put them to good use. Their mission is rooted in a thoughtful idea:

"If unwanted items knew where they were needed, people would help them get there."

By collecting, sorting, organizing, and redistributing donated goods, The Heartening helps ensure that items get a second life while supporting neighbors throughout the Austin area.

Camden Cares in Action

During our volunteer event, Camden team members rolled up their sleeves and assisted with sorting and organizing donated clothing and other items. While each task may have seemed small on its own, every item processed represented an opportunity to help someone in our community and keep usable goods out of local landfills.

The experience was a meaningful reminder that sustainability and community support often go hand in hand. By helping prepare donations for redistribution, our volunteers contributed to an effort that not only benefits individuals and families but also promotes more responsible consumption and waste reduction.
