Moving to a new city full of new people can be tough.  This is especially true if you are shy or have difficulty striking conversation with strangers.  However, having moved three times in four years, I have discovered some great ways to meet people in a new city.

1. Use the Internet... No, I Do Not Mean Social Media

There are a lot of pros and cons to living in the internet age.  Some studies say we are more isolated because of social media.  However, when used correctly, the internet can encourage us to leave the cyber world and interact with people face to face.

I am particularly fond of Couchsurfing and Meetup.  Both sites are for people looking to make new connections.  Couchsurfing appeals to travelers or people looking to meet travelers. Meetup is for people who may be new to town or want to expand their social circle.  Either way, both sites pair you with people who are eager to socialize and are more open.

2. Go to a Fitness Class

At first, I was a little embarrassed to go to a fitness class.  I rarely exercise and I eat enough pizza to put a certain group of super hero turtles to shame.  However, fitness groups are full of encouraging people of different experience levels.

I have participated in group yoga, Orange Theory classes, and aerial silks classes. Everyone in these groups has been supportive, energetic, and social.  I met one person who offered me a job at her restaurant when I was new to town.  Another has become my official yoga buddy.  Of course, besides meeting new people, fitness classes are also great for getting in shape.

3. Join a Club

Joining a club is one of the best ways to meet people in a new city.  Joining a club promises that you will meet people you have a common connection with.

Some of my best new relations have formed with people from my story teller group and my French group.  There are millions of clubs ranging from bowling leagues to photography clubs.

4. Volunteer

In addition to improving your new community, volunteering is a great way to meet new people.  It also feels good to devote time to a cause and help those who are in need.  If you volunteered for a national organization in your previous home, chances are the same organization exists in your new home.  If not, there are tons of sites that connect people with volunteer organizations in their community.  Living in Charlotte, I am a huge fan of the Hands On Charlotte organization.

5. Attend a Camden Resident Event

One of the benefits of living in a Camden apartment is resident events.  These events are designed for people to meet their neighbors.  Some, have lived in the city for years while others are brand new, giving residents a lot of opportunities to make new friends right outside their door.  A major plus is that once you’ve met your neighbors, you will know someone close by to go out with.  All Camden residents should definitely take advantage of this easy source for meeting people.

I have a special place in my heart for those who are ‘new in town’ since I am in the same boat.  Although it may require patience, if you put yourself out there, you will find a new band of friends in no time.  So, now that you have suggestions for meeting new people, get off of your computer and start socializing!  Have any other suggestions on how to meet people?  Share your knowledge with everyone by commenting below!
