Meet the unofficial mascot of Camden Monument Place!  “The Horse” that is connected to the property has become a landmark in Fairfax, VA.  People give directions based on its location and it has been a way to differentiate Camden Monument Place from the other communities in the area. 

Most people have no idea what the white marble horse head represents so we are here to dish out the facts!  According to Business Wire’s Blog post on September 25, 2006, World-Renowned Sculptor to Create 14-Foot Marble Horse, the horse comes with some interesting history.

Fact #1: The Horse is Italian

The marble used to create the sculpture was selected from the mountains above Cararra, Italy.  The 14-ft block started out at 55,000 pounds and was chipped down to 40,000 before being transported to Fairfax from Livorno, Italy.

Fact # 2: It was created by world-renowned artist John Fischer

Fischer was very involved in the creation of the horse.  To prepare for the final product he personally selected the marble, spent two months in an Italian marble factory completing the first stage, and carved 17 other marble horses to secure his understanding of all the angles and contours of a horse’s body.

Fact # 3: It's Related to a Historical Landmark

The majestic horse was chosen as the subject of the marble monument based on the historical location of the site.  The 1862 Battle of Chantilly began in the area on September 1st, which just so happens to be the same month and day as when the marble arrived in Fairfax in 2006!
