What is it about comfort shows from the ‘90s and early 2000s that make us nostalgic? A group of friends gathered together at the “usual spot”, talking about their lives, making you long for the same thing. We all could have our own Central Perk from “Friends” or MacLaren’s Pub from “How I Met Your Mother” to regularly hang out at, without having to get in a car! By finding a local “third place”, we will be fulfilling a need within ourselves and our community.

A third place is a public place that you regularly go to connect with like-minded people, outside of your work and home areas. A communal area to gather and share common interests with friends or strangers. But why has the term “third space” come up more recently in the past few years? During the pandemic in 2020, most people’s third place was removed due to public health and safety concerns. As things started to return to their pre-pandemic state, many people had grown accustomed to not leaving their homes. Whether it's food, home goods, or social interaction, everything you could want is accessible online. So why would we need to spend valuable time going somewhere, if we could do it from the comfort of our couch?

Why do we need a Third Space?

How many of us have uttered the phrase “it’s just so hard to meet people these days”? It’s easy to finish the workday, wrap up a few chores, have dinner, and call it a night. Having a third place keeps us from shutting out the world, a task we now need to be consciously aware of. Third places allow us to meet people outside of our usual social circles. Introverts can experience the same spark by having someone remember their drink order or recognize a haircut, before diving back into their favorite new book.

How to Find a Third Space?

The key is to find somewhere that you feel welcome. Your third space should energize you when you need it, and comfort you on those exhausting days. In the downtown Orlando area, many Camden apartment buildings have third spaces located on the first floor! Camden North Quarter offers a unique Japanese fusion dining experience at Natsu. If you’re looking to get a workout in, check out the classes offered at F45 Training. Camden Thornton Park has a spot for every interest! Bynx is a local coffee shop that offers live music and vinyl records to flip through. If you’re looking for a sweet treat, check out a local ice cream boutique, The Greenery Creamery.

The newest Camden community in Raleigh, Camden Village District, is located in the heart of so many local and national shopping and dining options. If you’re looking for something a bit quieter, too, visit the Oberlin Regional Library. They have family story time, crafting groups, and book clubs!

These days, it’s important to slow down and enjoy the little things. Finding a shared space that lets you take familiar faces and turn them into friendly ones is rare. Look around your community and see what is out there! We’re sure you will find something of your own!
