Nobody likes moving. It can be stressful, exhausting, and at times, overwhelming. You don’t really realize just how much stuff you own until you must shove it all inside a million boxes. Camden streamlines the process of moving or transferring into your new apartment, but moving in general is almost always stressful.
I’ve done this a few times over the years and learned that it doesn’t have to be this way. There are a ton of ways to make your move easy, but I have found that some work better than others. With these 5 simple tips, you can learn from my moving mistakes.

Do NOT procrastinate. Listen. I know it’s easy to tell yourself “I can do this later,” or “we still have time.” Do not give in! You will dig yourself into a hole you cannot get out of. The stress will only get worse. There are even proven ways to overcome procrastination. As a rule of thumb, the earlier you start packing the better.
Set aside important items. Things like valuables (jewelry), important documents (birth certificates, pet documents), and fragile items (china, artwork) should always go with you. Sure, your movers may say they are careful and even get your items insured, but you never know what may happen. Additionally, I always make sure I have an overnight bag (toiletries, change of clothes, and phone charger).
Use a numbering system for your boxes. It is such a simple thing to do, but it can save you so much time when you are moving in to your new home. When you start filling a box, put a number on it. Start a list in your phone or on a notebook with each box number and its contents. You can also write the room on the side of the box. That way, it goes directly to the right spot during move in. This will help you keep track of not only where things are, but how many boxes you have in total.

Use this opportunity to declutter (using these awesome steps from Camden’s Blog)! You’ve probably noticed you have more stuff than you realized at this point. The four pillars of declutter I use are: Sell, Donate, Recycle, Trash. You may be able to make some gas money on items in great condition. Less valuable items like toys or clothing can be donated to free up precious closet space. Some items that you may think should be trashed completely can be recycled! Check your local recycling guidelines to see what can be accepted. Everything else you want to get rid of? Trash it. Another way to declutter is Marie Kondo’s KonMari method, which you can find a breakdown here on Camden's blog.
Don’t forget to change your address. You should inform the Postal Service well in advance for a change of address so there is no hiccup in delivery. This goes for more than just mail, too. You’ll need to change your utility address, insurance address, and most importantly your billing address. All it takes is a 5-minute phone call for each one!
