Why Camden? Believe it or not that is one of the main questions I get asked when I tell people that I work for Camden Property Trust. There are so many reasons why I choose to work for Camden that a conversation simply isn’t long enough to go over everything. There are so many reasons for why I absolutely love the company I work for that it is almost impossible for me to narrow it down to only a couple. Then the reality of it all hits and I simply reply with, “Why not Camden? Why would I not want to work for one of the top multi-family housing company’s in the world?” After the initial shock of my reply they look at me and smile and simply say, “Tell me more.” I would be glad to.

Named Top Places to Work for Women AND Top Places to Work for Diversity

Camden was named one of the top places to work for women in 2015. Hold on that is not all! Camden was also named as top place to work for diversity in 2015. Whoa! That says a lot about an organization to be named by Fortune 100 Best Workplaces in multiple categories! As a young bi-racial woman this is extremely important to me. Growing up female and a minority it was always assumed that I would never be as successful as my male counterparts or that I would never be able to support a family off of my income alone. It was never anything I agreed with and I knew it would be something I would be happy to prove wrong. I was fortunate to join the Camden family because Camden leadership does not see male or female. They do not discriminate based off your religious beliefs, ethnicity, or the color of your skin. You can be as successful as YOU want to be and that means a lot to me on a personal level for so many different reasons. As I stated in a blog written by Stephanie Oribhabor, Camden Makes the List! 100 Best Workplaces for Women, Here’s Why!:

“One of the things I love most about working for Camden is that you are not classified in any predetermined groups or categories. Your gender, nationality, ethnicity, etc. are not the qualities that set you apart within the company; it is YOU and what you contribute to the success of the organization. You are viewed as an individual with individual talents, strengths, and achievements. Camden celebrates and commemorates the hard work and determination of each and every one of their employees and as a woman there is comfort in knowing that I am just as respected and valued as any other employee within the company."

The Culture

The Camden culture is not anything that can be explained. We all try but it never makes sense to anyone outside of Camden. Yet we continue to try to describe it and explain it. We are a bunch of crazy hugging people! Yes! Yes we are! That’s us and that is what makes us Camden! The best way, and only way I have ever been able to describe it, is that you have to experience to understand it. It is walking into a room and know that you are part of a family. Doesn’t matter that you don’t know who they are because you will before the day is over, that’s a guarantee! It is about being able to pick up the phone and work through a problem or an issue and understand, and most importantly believe, that the person on the other end wants to help you and they too understand. Being part of the Camden culture is about having fun with your Camden brothers and sisters and doing silly things that make life and moments fun and worthwhile. You have friends for life when you are part of this organization and to be surrounded by such a great group of people in the corporate world is almost unheard of. Family is extremely important to me and I have gained a new family for life within Camden.

The Leadership

Rumor has it that everything starts with the leader and sets the tone for the rest of the organization. Well lucky me! I couldn’t ask for a better leadership group to lead me and help me grow and develop. From the very top of the leadership team we are led by the absolute best set of leaders that wants to see their employees achieve excellence. Our direct supervisors invest in their employees through continuous training courses, conferences, and one on one meetings. The company values are not just written statements. They are words that are believed in and demonstrated and communicated throughout the company. Our leaders are real humans that the employees actually know. They are not just simply a name on a building with no face. They are humble and they are seen playing volleyball at the company picnics, or showing off proud “Pop” moments through home videos, or participating in skits that are recorded for years and years of laughter.

So why do I choose to work for Camden? I believe the reasons are pretty clear. Who wouldn’t want to work for such an amazing organization?
