Monthly Subscription Boxes- Are They Worth the Hype?

Stitch Fix, varies monthly. “Clothing and accessories hand-selected by a personal stylist, delivered to your door” “You can sign up to receive as often as you want (monthly, every other, etc). You fill out a personal profile about the type of fashion you prefer, sizes preferences, color preferences, and more. They also suggest creating a Pinterest board so your personal clothing stylist has a clear idea of what you like. I had pretty good luck with what my stylist chose for me, although others have complained they never received anything they liked. I am not sure how much of that was not providing a thorough profile. The items I received were unique and not something I would have chosen for myself but did love. The downsides to Stitchfix are that the items are typically "high care" (dry clean, hand wash), and expensive. You can choose your budget in the profile but their idea of less expensive is still higher than you might prefer to pay. There are never "sales". I never tried to return an item that fell apart (I refused to hand wash), so I am not sure how that works. The up-side is that it's like Christmas in a box, especially if you like clothes. They give you three days to decide if you like the clothes. If you want to return anything, they provide a postage paid bag and you mark the returns in your account. They charge you for what you kept and the bag goes back in the mail. The only issue is if that box comes while you are out of town, you are charged after 3 days whether you opened that box or not. You have to really monitor when you will be receiving the box. You can also earn credits for anyone that signs up as a referral!” –Karen, Camden resident “I have been getting these for about 7-8 months now and I absolutely love it! It’s basically like having your own personal stylist send you a box of clothes/accessories each month. I still do a little shopping on the side but not nearly as much now because my stylist keeps me up-to-date with all the latest style trends.” –Sarah, Regional Marketing Director “I have mixed feelings about this one. I have bought maybe one or two items out of each box, and I’ve gotten it five or six times now. I recently updated it so that I’m getting them every other month instead of every month. It’s $20 “styling fee” when they ship you the box, then you buy separately which items out of the box you like. The $20 you paid will be applied to your final total and if you buy all five items from the box you get a 25% discount. I’d say my biggest issues has been with clothing pieces not fitting me right (during setting up your profile you enter your measurements, sizes, weight, height, etc) or not being flattering on me. Second biggest issue is price – if I was buying everything out of the box, even with the $20 credit applied and the 25% discount, I’d still be paying about $200 per box. Which is a lot for me to be spending on clothes at this point in my life, especially every month. So I don’t buy from them unless I absolutely love it.” –Anonymous Camden Employee 6.Wine Shop at Home, cost varies. “Come for the taste, stay for the lifestyle” “I used to be a member of a wine club! I went to a wine tasting party, then had a party of my own and signed up for the membership. I LOVED it, it was Wine Shop at home. You can choose how many bottles you want, if you want 2 red or 2 whites, or 1 of each. I received 2 bottles each month, 1 red and 1 white. It was around $50-60 I think? Every month they would be delivered, I would have to sign for them obviously because its alcohol-if I wasn’t there someone over 21 would have to sign for me. Only 1 time there was some confusion with it, and they didn’t bring it to the office to have someone sign for it so it was sent to the FedEx store and I had to go get it. And my consultant was texting me about it and apologizing and super helpful about it! Something that was neat is that the shipment came with 3-4 recipes that complimented the wine, and I love to cook-so I thought that was great! Once we started to budget for a house and a wedding I had to cancel the membership.” –Alissa, Camden Brushy Creek 7.Julep, $19.99-$24.99 monthly” The beauty box that delivers exactly what you want, every month” “Absolutely worth the money, although I’ve been skipping lately since I have over 50 polishes at this point so it’s hard to justify buying more before I go through some of those. Great colors and great quality products. In my experience I can usually go about a week with their nail polish on before it starts really chipping, which with other brands I’ve used it starts chipping within a day or two. They also have been coming up with different beauty products, like make-up and body products, that they’ll include in some of the boxes. Most recently I got their hydrating body cleansing oil (screen shot below) and it’s amazing! I usually have a few dry skin patches on my upper arms that, since I started using this product, have gone away completely. It doesn’t leave you with a weird oily feel to your skin after the shower either.” –Anonymous Camden Employee 8.Try the World, $33-39 monthly “Discover the world through food” “Try The World is a box that contains foods and snacks from different countries. I had a Moroccan box and a French box. They include spices, teas, cookies, candies, sauces, etc. The quality was excellent. They also include a few recipes, music and movie suggestions, and information about the cuisine. If you like trying out new foods, like learning about different cultures, and like to cook, these are really fun.” –Karen, Camden resident 9.Graze, $11.99 monthly ‘Don’t just snack, graze.com” “I get the Graze box once a month. I get 8 snack size portions in each box. I used to get it twice a month with 4 in each box, but decided to go with the bigger box once a month. I have been getting Graze for about a year now and I really enjoy it. I get them sent to my office so I have snacks ready to go already portioned out and I know what is in them, calorie count, etc. I can go on the site and let them know if I liked each snack and which one(s) I didn’t so I never get those again. I can also tell them if I want more a month, less a month, or none at all. The site is very user friendly and I think it is a great value for the convenience and variety of snacks I get.” –Yousra, Camden Corporate Office There are hundreds of monthly subscription boxes that were not mentioned in this blog post. How do you find out if there is a box for you? I discovered a website called Hello Subscription. On the site, you are able to search through categories and find a box and an easy link to subscribe. Which box is right for you? As much as I love getting a surprise monthly, in the end, I stopped getting monthly subscriptions because my second bedroom started to look like an episode of hoarders. After writing this blog post, I am starting to get the itch to subscribe again. After all, who doesn’t love getting a package in the mail?
