Go up! Smaller apartments may have rooms that are smaller than you’d like, but try to think vertically. Buy taller bookshelves, add shelving units to tops of your walls, or even hang paintings and other artwork right below the ceiling. You’ll be able to take advantage of the extra space and draw the eyes of your guests upward, creating the illusion of a larger room.
Use a few large pieces. Using one large piece of furniture in each room can actually make the space feel larger. In the living room, don’t stray away from a large couch; in the bedroom, focus on a bigger bed, and in the kitchen, try an spacious dining room table.
Get organized. Good organization is key to staying afloat in a small apartment. Remember: everything has a place, and you should do your best to keep it there!
Use multipurpose pieces. By purchasing a few items that can have multiple functions, you can reduce the total amount of pieces you need. For example, an ottoman or coffee table could double as a storage unit, or maybe use a futon for your bed, as it will double for seating space during the day.
Keep out the clutter. Try to avoid buying more belongings while you’re living in your apartment. You might also want to take the opportunity to get rid of some of your things. Drop off those clothes you never wear at a local donation center and recycle those old magazines you’ve got lying around. You’ll feel better for it, and your apartment will be tidier.
