Pictures My inner child is about to have a full-blown fangirl freak-out! Today is the opening of The Lego Movie. I fully realize that a 40-Something, suburban cheer mom seems an unlikely candidate for the movie’s target audience. In fact, if you are a childless adult over the age of 20 you might not even be aware that there IS a Lego movie.
What draws me to this film is the amazing cast. Just looking at the Internet Movie Database makes me totally geek out! The movie is written and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the team behind Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. They have also collaborated on How I Met Your Mother and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, one of my new favorite shows. The cast stars some of my favorite actors on the planet. Chris Pratt from Parks and Recreation (the most awesomely underappreciated show on TV) stars as the Lego minifigure who is mistaken as the savior of the world. We first meet him when he wakes up and proclaims, “Good morning apartment!” In my “I Wish Pop Culture Were My Reality” dreams, I prefer to believe that he is living in a beautiful Camden apartment. He is joined on his adventure by Nick Offerman (also of Parks and Rec), Elizabeth Banks (Hunger Games, 30 Rock), Alison Brie (Community, Mad Men), Morgan Freeman (um… everything!) and the hilarious Will Arnett (Arrested Development, 30 Rock, Blades of Glory). They work together to overthrow the evil President Business, voiced by the always funny Will Farrell, and his sidekick played by Liam Neeson. To up the geeky awesomeness even more, Anthony Daniels, the original C-3PO from Star Wars, is featured as, you guessed it, C-3PO! Huzzah! Now, I have not seen the movie yet so I cannot offer a personal review, but critics seem to be united on the greatness of this film. It currently has a rating of 98% from the notoriously tough site Rotten Tomatoes. For comparison purposes, Gravity has a 97% favorable rating. So far I have not heard a single negative thing about The Lego Movie. I might not even have to bribe my girls to see if with me so that I don’t look like the weird adult sneaking into a kid’s movie by myself. :)
Yes, the Sochi Olympics Opening Ceremony is on tonight, but your DVR can allow you to time-shift the show. If you want to know if the movie is for you, check out the official Warner Bros. Pictures trailer on Youtube. It would be a great group activity, so jump on My Camden and see if you can gather a bunch of neighbors to go with you. Brave the winter weather and get out to see The Lego Movie!
