Looking for ways to stay active and get the most out of your workouts in your apartment home? I’ve put together some quick tips and tricks to help you get the most of your at-home workout and to incorporate fitness into your daily lives at Camden!
Consistency is Key
The most important thing for any type of fitness or lifestyle change is sticking with it! While this is easier said than done, it’s not that much of a routine change when broken down by time. The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week— that’s just under 22 minutes of activity daily! Even without utilizing public gyms and indoor workout facilities, there are so many great ways to utilize the space you have in your apartment to reach those fitness goals!
One of the best apartment-friendly ways to get some exercise in is a little at-home yoga! There are several ways to get your yoga fix without going to a studio; all you need is a little space, some time, and an optional yoga mat. If you’re new to yoga, make sure you check out free or minimal cost resources through apps and websites like DoYogaWithMe, Daily Burn, and Yome. For beginners and even experienced yoga aficionados, It can be difficult to know where to start because there are so many resources, but one of my favorite apps to use is DownDog. This app is great for both beginners and more experienced yogis because it allows the user to tailor their experience based on familiarity, goals, and time! There are even options to customize the music you want to listen to, the instructor you want to watch, and what area you want to focus on.
Body Weight Workouts
Did you know you don’t actually need weights to build muscle? There are countless options for workouts in the comfort of your living room, using the resistance of only your body weight. Sound complicated? Not to worry! Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or a true novice, without any equipment:! A few examples are:
- Plank - start with 3 sets of 30 seconds each
- Russian Twists – set a timer for a minute or do 20 to each side
- Wall Sits – 3 sets of 20 seconds
- Pushups – try for 3 sets of 10 to start
- Bodyweight Squats – 5 sets of 10 is a good place to start
If you’re having trouble coming up with more exercises, there are some great fitness resources, offering everything from training plans, yoga classes, and home inspired workouts! Some of my favorites are Chloe Ting, Yoga with Adriene, and Blogilates.
Walking is a tremendously easy and efficient way to increase your physical activity. Even in the midst of social distancing guidelines, the CDC is still emphasizing that the great outdoors are still encouraged and available (keeping at least six feet distance of course). Once you’ve found your favorite neighborhood loop, remember that most phones and smartwatches incorporate some type of step counting, so it’s easy to challenge yourself to crush daily goals. Wanting to make things more interesting? Try apps such as Map My Run, Nike Run Club, and Runkeeper for a little friendly competition. With warmer weather upon us, getting out and walking around your community or neighborhood is a wonderful way to increase your activity and keep a handle on your mental health.
No matter what type of exercise you choose to do, you’re taking steps in the right direction for your emotional and physical health with daily activity your working towards goals, well-being, and a healthier lifestyle.
