In condo and apartment living, there are a host of written rules and regulations and many address the balconies. There are well-written policies as well as neighborly expectations. How often are people inconsiderate of their neighbors? Plenty. Some people seem to be oblivious. Balcony Etiquette is pretty simple, but often overlooked. 

• Let their dogs stay on the balcony, unattended (some dogs can urinate at will or bark constantly).

• Groom their pet, give haircuts, or release other wind-blown debris that litters all areas down-wind.

• Smoke pipes, cigars and cigarettes without regard for the direction of their smoke plumes.

• Carry on loud, argumentative, detailed relationship conversations on the balcony, stairwell or parking lot.

• Hang and refill bird feeders with eaten or overflowing seeds spilling to the balconies below.

• Play music that can easily be heard from neighboring occupants.

• Sweeping debris from your balcony onto someone else's balcony.

It can be fascinating and maddening to watch people go about their life so close to other people and show no concern or interest in how they are affecting or irritating those around them. People are expected to enjoy their apartments, their balconies, and live their lives. And other people should be able to enjoy their space as well. Be aware of the policies addressing balconies and pets. Although you may see someone else not following the rules to the letter, it doesn't mean they aren't in violation. Be considerate of your neighbors. If you are active on your balcony, with someone living below you, invest in an outdoor rug to contain incidental happenings.  Understand they might work a different shift than you. They might be allergic to smoke, dogs, or loud inappropriate conversations. Be aware and more people will enjoy their space. Keep the peace with your balcony neighbor. Invest in an outdoor rug.
