A Very Different Heartbreak Hill
I am what is known in running circles as a Penguin. I run purely for the pleasure of running. I am fat and slow, but I love to log long distances on my feet. My goals are never more than to simply finish a race, and I will never set a course record. However, there is still some small part of me that wishes I could qualify for the only race in America that holds pre-requisites for entrance – the Boston Marathon. If you ask any serious amateur runner, they will be able to tell you what time they would need in order to “BQ”. When I arrived at my office today I started the process of brainstorming potential blogging ideas. At the top of my list was one about the Boston Marathon which was being held for the 116th year today. My dilemma was trying to find a way to incorporate my love of long-distance running and this storied race into a post that has at least some vague relevance to a Blog about Camden Apartments. I was still trying to find some common thread to link everything together when I received a Breaking News text on my phone that there had been explosions at the finish line. Considering bad news is practically the only thing that is ever reported on our news channels, this should not shock me as much as it does. However, I am having a hard time processing what is happening in Boston right now. A finish line is a place to celebrate all of the blood, sweat, tears and toenails that were shed for that one moment. It is a place of pure joy where grown men burst into tears and weep with pride at their accomplishment. It is a place where you can thank your family for allowing you to spend every free moment training on the roads around you house instead of sitting down for dinner. It is a place of raw emotion. To have that sacred line turned into a war zone is just not something I can comprehend. My thoughts and prayers are with the injured victims and the entire city of Boston. This post might not have been a successful marriage of running and apartments, but to everyone impacted by today's events, Camden Cares.
