Every year, the Camden Cares initiative works together with the community to give back. Previous efforts include the Ronald McDonald House, the Capitol Area Food Bank and the Wounded Warriors Project.
On October 26, 2019 Camden employees and their families participated in the Making Strides of Washington DC Walk for Breast Cancer. The Mid-Atlantic Camden team chose to participate in the walk as a Camden employee in the region is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer, which made participating even more special.
Whether it was because they know someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer or just because they wanted to give their time to the community, they volunteered with passion.
Regional Coordinator, Yesenia is proud to stand as a supporter of her mother, a breast cancer survivor.
“Breast cancer runs in my family, and my mother was diagnosed years ago and is doing great today. It hits home, so to be able to walk and spend some time with others whose family has been through this is nice. It’s also great to see women who are survivors come out and be proud that they have this beat. Seeing them support others and share their stories is an inspiration. Technological advances are saving more lives, and treatment options are growing.”

Camden Cares is a chance for employees to take time out of their work and personal lives to serve others in need. Gina Karbowski, Camden NOMA, loves working for a company that encourages us to participate!
“Breast cancer has affected so many families directly or indirectly; the impact of giving a few hours and donating money goes farther when we do it together. It was exciting to see all the survivors come out and inspire future generations. Cancer is not selective. It can happen to anyone and being a participant in something like this sets the example to lead the way with giving back.”

Employees even involved their family members in the event. Jasmine Frost, Camden Shady Grove, used the walk as an opportunity to have an important talk with her daughter, showing her that supporting this cause encourages all of those affected by cancer.
“It was so moving to see so many survivors and those still going through the fight. We have had family members battle breast cancer, and they are now thankfully in remission. But that isn’t the case for everyone, so it’s important to keep fighting for a cure.”

Alongside thousands of breast cancer supporters, the Camden team members walked 2.25 miles around the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC. Our team watched various presentations during the event, learning more about breast cancer awareness, and hearing stories from survivors. It was a day filled with smiles and tears, and Camden hugs!
Camden invests in every community we serve. We support those in need and give back to those who have given so much. When we work together with our neighbors, we create Living Excellence.
