6 Tips to Make Working from Home Work for You
Before I started the awesome job of being Camden’s Social Media Specialist, I had a job at a digital marketing agency for 2 years. This job really helped fuel my love for all things digital marketing and social media. We had a pretty sweet modern office in Midtown Houston. It was equipped with the latest technology, fun coworkers, and not to mention a fridge full of beer. Like many businesses, the company transitioned and decided that turning into a remote team was the best option at the time. That meant this outgoing, talkative, social digital marketer was going to have to learn to work from home. And by home, I mean my one bedroom apartment with no office.
So how did I do it? There were a few days I worked in my pajamas. There were a few days where I had conversations with my dogs and we enjoyed a lovely lunch break that included Law & Order SVU reruns. Ok, but seriously. If you’re working from home (and approximately 3.3 million people in the US work remotely at least half of the time), here are a few tips to help keep you productive (and somewhat sane):
1. Keep a scheduleIf you’re scheduled to start working at 9 AM, don’t wake up at 8:55 and immediately plop yourself in front of your computer. Give yourself some time to start the day. Make some coffee, journal, walk your dogs, whatever it is that helps you jump start your day. Sticking to a morning ritual can increase your productivity for the rest of the day.
2. Get dressedI have these Houston Texans pajama pants that I LOVE and can easily stay in for 48 hours. But there is something about getting ready for the day and putting on an outfit that changes your mood. I’m not saying bust out the stilettos and your blazer. I just mean getting out of your pajamas for the day can help to put you in an ”office mood” and can change your mindset.
3. Stay connectedIt can be easy to only communicate with coworkers through emails and instant messages. Set up a weekly Google hangout or a video conference so you can actually see who you’re talking to! Maybe pick up the phone to discuss an issue instead of just sending another email.
4. Separate your office and living spaceWhether you’re lucky enough to have a room for an office or you just use a desk in a nook of your apartment, separate your areas! Put your office area in a space where you can walk away from it and keep it separate from the rest of your home.
5. Disconnect at the end of the daySince you’re at home, it can be easy to stay logged in and work through lunch. It can also be easy to not log off until 7 PM or later. Disconnect at a reasonable hour at the end of the day and stick to your schedule. That way you can be sure you’re not overdoing it and you can give yourself time to decompress.
6. Get out of the house
If you work in an office, you sometimes need some fresh air or to get out of the office for lunch. You can get the same feeling at home. It can be easy to get comfortable! A change of scenery, a cup of coffee somewhere else, or even working outside can help boost productivity. These are just a few tips that helped me from going crazy when I worked from home. It’s not for everyone, but if that’s the predicament you’re in now, make the most of it!
